In line with most liberal parties, the party describe their political philosophy as being based on notions of people deciding their own future, and are committed to Gibraltarian self-determination regarding constitutional arrangements. The party seeks city-state and dominion status for Gibraltar.[2]
The Gibraltar Liberals formed an alliance with the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party for the 2003 election to the then-House of Assembly. This alliance polled 39.7% of the vote, returning 7 out of 15 members, 2 of whom were Liberals. They again contested the 2007 elections as an alliance, with the GLP candidates polling 13.65% of the popular vote and winning 3 out of 17 seats. On December 8th 2011, the Gibraltar Liberal Party along with the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party won the 2011 general election (10/17 seats in the Gibraltar Parliament) by a narrow margin and thus formed the next Government of Gibraltar.
The Gibraltar Liberal Party is a member of the Liberal International.[3]
